PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a regenerative skincare ingredient derived from salmon DNA — specifically the non-coding spacer DNA sequences that are purified, sterilized, and formulated into serums, ampoules, and masks. Initially developed as a wound-healing pharmaceutical in South Korea and Italy, PDRN crossed over into cosmetic skincare around 2022 and became one of the most-searched K-Beauty ingredients of 2024–2025. It is positioned as a "bio-stimulator" — an ingredient that signals the skin's own repair machinery to upregulate collagen, accelerate cell renewal, and reduce inflammation. The ingredient occupies a unique space between cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical, offering clinical-level regeneration at cosmetic price points. Its association with in-clinic "salmon DNA injections" (PDRN mesotherapy) further drives curiosity among skincare-interested consumers.

PDRN is a polynucleotide compound composed of deoxyribonucleotide fragments (50–2,000 base pairs) that act as purinergic receptor (A2A) agonists. Activation of A2A receptors on fibroblasts and keratinocytes stimulates collagen I, collagen III, and fibronectin production, while simultaneously suppressing TNF-alpha and IL-6 inflammatory cytokines. In wound-healing clinical studies, topical and injectable PDRN accelerated re-epithelialization by 30–40% compared to placebo. In cosmetic-grade formulations, a 2023 Korean study showed statistically significant improvement in periorbital wrinkle depth at 8 weeks with a 0.1% PDRN serum. The ingredient is highly biocompatible — the extracted DNA is processed to remove all antigenic proteins, eliminating allergy risk. Thermal stability is moderate; store formulations below 25°C for best potency.

PDRN serums and ampoules are typically applied once daily, morning or evening, after cleansing and before moisturizer. Because PDRN works as a cellular signaling molecule rather than a film-former or humectant, it does not require a moisture-damp application window. Apply 2–3 drops to dry skin and press gently to aid absorption. Allow 60 seconds before applying moisturizer. For best results, pair with a ceramide moisturizer and SPF (PDRN-stimulated new collagen is UV-sensitive during the first weeks of regeneration). Most users report visible skin texture improvement at 4–6 weeks. Injectable PDRN mesotherapy delivered in-clinic will produce more dramatic results than topical formulations.
